Personal Statement

I have been teaching English composition, literature, and media studies courses in the Seattle Colleges for the past three decades. I have also developed and taught numerous interdisciplinary Integrated Studies courses including Storytelling for Resistance in Pop Culture, being offered Fall 2026 quarter.

One of my great joys as a writing teacher is seeing my students discover the love of language and be empowered to make their own choices as writers. As a non-native English speaker and an educator devoted to culturally responsive teaching, I am passionate about helping students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds develop their distinct voices.

I am also a non-fiction writer, and I have been published in The Seattle Metropolitan Magazine, Seattle Times, YourTango, and KUOW. I am currently working on an essay collection titled An Incomplete Dictionary of Korean American Mothers and Daughters: A Memoir-in-Essays.
