Personal Statement

I grew up in Burien, Washington, a suburban neighborhood under the flight path of Sea-Tac airport and graduated from Highline High School in 1974.  I went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Washington in 1979.  I then worked for the Boeing Military Airplane Company in Wichita, Kansas and in Seattle for five years following my college graduation.  While working at Boeing, I discovered my love of poetry by attending Nelson Bentley's evening poetry workshop at the UW.  This life-changing experience encouraged me to quit my day job and pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the UW which I finished in 1988.  During my last year of graduate school, I was fortunate to have done a one-quarter internship at North Seattle Community College with English instructor Marcia Barton. This internship was another life-altering experience and led directly to an offer of a part-time English position at North, and I've been doing this wonderful work ever since.  Teaching English at North has truly been an honor and a joy.
