Personal Statement

Get to Know Me

Welcome, I'm Kevin. I use He/Him/His Pronouns (Why Pronouns Matter). My interest in technology began when I was 14. I detasseled corn for a summer in order to save and buy my first computer: a Commodore 64. I spent hours teaching myself to program, which later lead to a programming position at a University. Anyone remember PLATO terminals? Since, I have developed curriculum and taught in academic, non-profit, and corporate environments. I have also held administrative positions focusing on developing and supporting faculty.

My Teaching Style

In the classroom, we'll engage in discussion, develop individual and group projects, and learn together. My educational philosophy is that "Education is a combined process of teaching and learning with an end goal to measurably increase knowledge and improve performance of learners through a systems approach of designing, developing, implementing, updating, and evaluating program and course content based on research, best practices, and universal design where goals and objectives for learning can be determined by either the teacher, the learner, or both."

As a leader in education, I am driven by student experience and success. This success is derived from effective and efficient operational systems and quality course design and teaching practices. Though my work spans across all aspects of the educational experience, my passion is in developing programs and support services in collaboration with faculty in a manner that expands educational access to students through accessible, anti-racist, and equitable teaching and learning practices.

My Expectations

During the course of our time together, you will be expected to engage in discussions with me and your peers, share your experience, relate the content of our courses to your own experiences and situations, and commit to meeting initial deadlines. Once initial deadlines are met, you get the entire quarter to submit work as many times as possible to earn full credit. Your success matters and you will get out of the courses what you put into them. My role is to help you be successful by being available, providing resources, and coaching when needed.

My Work in the Community

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

• Served as an Inclusion Advocate on several committees working to ensure hiring practices, teaching strategies, and institutional policies are developed and implemented using best practices in Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility.
• Founded one queer community center and help start another - providing support, educational, and social opportunities to a diverse and marginalized community. 

Quality Teaching and Learning

• Responsible for the creation of a faculty development program that resulted in over 120 faculty participating in over 1,500 hours of training within the first year. In the early 2000s, Kevin facilitated a statewide initiative which led to the creation of a quality design rubric for online courses. 

Quality Online Course Design

• Led a state-wide team of faculty and eLearning professional to develop an internationally recognized list of standards for designing quality online courses.
