Personal Statement

Hello! Allow me to introduce myself: I’ve been teaching Composition classes at North Seattle College starting part-time in Fall 2010, and full-time since Fall 2013. As an essay-writer myself, I think (actually, I know) that writing is hard, but I also love it and the voice it gives each of us humans. I approach my classes with the idea that I am a more experienced writer here to guide and assist a group of less experienced writers through the process of writing. Besides reading and writing, I’m very interested in the media, and both my English 101 and 102 classes focus on different aspects of media and technology. Though I mostly teach English 101 and English 102, I sometimes teach developmental English classes, Creative Writing, Creative Nonfiction, and a Humanities class called Reading the Media. I was born and raised in Seattle, and am an alumni of Ballard High School (1999), Whitman College (BA in Politics, 2003), and Eastern Washington University (MFA in Creative Nonfiction Writing, 2010). After college, I moved to Boston to be a newspaper reporter. When I got burned out on that first career and the East Coast, I slowly made my way back west. I lived for a year in Lander, Wyoming, where I worked at a restaurant and on a ranch, rode horses, hiked, and was adopted by my Corgi, Bodhi (that’s him in my picture). Then I landed in Spokane for two years, where I attended graduate school, started teaching, and met my husband. I was thrilled to be able to continue my teaching career in Seattle, and to become a full-time faculty member in the English department here at North. My favorite things about teaching are the challenge it provides me every day, and the inspiration I gain from students. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions about my classes.
