Welcome to summer 2020! We likely will not have weekly updates over the summer, but below are some key things we all need to do this quarter.
Summer Schedule
The summer schedule can be found here.
Contact Your Students
As rosters are now complete, please be sure to contact your students--new students in particular. Students are starting to call the front desk to ask when classes begin. When we get those calls, we follow up with you to help students make a connection.
Syllabus Requirements
This is yet another reminder that because all instruction will be remote this summer, your syllabus needs to state whether you are recording attendance through Teacher Verification or Learner Mastery. You can learn about the two methods here. The State Board also provided this updated Q&A document. Tina Miller graciously offered to provide her syllabus as an example, which you can find here. She outlines the work she's asking each student to complete as well as the hours of participation for that work. (She also wants to share credit with Baxi Vu, who shared her syllabus with Tina).
WABERS Forms
All students, including returning students, must complete a new WABERS form this summer. You can find the WABERS form here. You have three options for helping your students complete this:
- Make it an assignment/do it in class
- Invite Gina to your class (and possibly meet students one-on-one in a Zoom breakout room)
- Ask Gina to call your students
Thanks for your help with this federal requirement.
Tuition Waivers
We plan to again waive tuition for all students this summer. In order to make this happen, we once again need every student to request a tuition waiver. They can:
- Email SouthBTS@seattlecolleges.edu
- Call the office at (206) 934-5363
Students simply need to say that they are unable to pay. Like last quarter, we may also try mailing waivers for students to return. We may also try to allow students to request waivers via Talking Points. More to come!
Packets
We have a slightly different process for faculty who want to send packets to their students. Because the copy center is closed for the summer, BTS staff will copy, stuff envelopes, address envelopes, and deliver packets to the campus mail room. Because we do not have unlimited access to campus, we have set up the following deadlines for submitting packets.
Packets submitted by 4 pm on Friday, July 17 will be mailed by Wednesday, July 22.
Packets submitted by 4 pm on Friday, July 24 will be mailed by Wednesday, July 29.
Packets submitted by 4 pm on Friday, July 31 will be mailed by Wednesday, August 5.
Packets submitted by 4 pm on Friday, August 7 will be mailed by Wednesday, August 12.
As always, you can submit your packets here.
Chromebooks and Wi-Fi Hot Spots for Students
So far, the process for requesting Chromebooks and Wi-Fi Hot Spots for students has not changed. You have to request on behalf of your students, and you can do that through this link.
Amber is able to access the spreadsheet of all students who have requested technology, and she continues to help the college reach our students. So if you see an inquiry from Amber, please respond. She might be trying to help your students.
Student Evaluations
Like spring quarter, I want to encourage online student evaluations as much as possible. Also like last quarter, I will support you if you use the college's online system or if you develop one of your own (such as a Google or other survey).
For ESL 1-3, we will again offer to mail student evaluations to student homes with an addressed return envelope to the college. Look for more information during the week of July 20, as we plan to start mailing forms to students in late July or early August.
