This information is meant to help faculty prepare to teach ESL 4. Once hired, you will have access to these and other resources at the Basic and Transitional Studies (BTS) Faculty CANVAS page.
ESL 4 Supplemental Course Outline (Click here)
The course outline provides the learning outcomes of the class. It also provides other information such as the class cap, the course description, and pre-requisites. The learning outcomes are critical, however, because you are required to design your class to meet these outcomes. Please note that all ESL classes include digital literacy outcomes in addition to those focused on speaking, listening, reading, writing, and grammar. You will be assigned computer lab time where you can teach your students to meet these outcomes.
Sample Syllabi
You are required to create a syllabus for every class you teach and to provide a copy of the syllabus to the dean. You can turn in your syllabus through the BTS Faculty CANVAS page. These syllabi are provided to you as samples.

- ESL 040 Spring 2019 main campus, mornings

Syllabi Requirements for Canvas (remote learning)
Faculty who are teaching online or hybrid classes must include specific language in their syllabi describing how attendance hours will be recorded for students. Faculty can choose:
Teacher Verification: Assignments have a pre-determined number of hours stated in the syllabus that will be awarded to the extent that the teacher verifies that the student completed the work.
Learner Mastery: Assignments have a pre-determined number of hours stated in the syllabus that will be awarded based on the students' mastery of the content. For example, 70% or higher mastery may result in full hours awarded.
Further guidance from the SBCTC can be found here. The SBCTC also recently provided this updated Q&A document.
Recommended Texts
The following texts were recommended by ESL faculty for students at this level. These books, and others, are available in the division's resource library.
- Curtis, J. and Lambert, J. (2009) Future 4: English for Results. Pearson College Div.
Student Evaluation Forms
The faculty agreement (6.10.C) states that faculty will conduct quarterly student evaluations. You can access an ESL 4 evaluation form by clicking here. You can also create your own evaluation form as long as it asks students to provide input on your strengths, areas for improvement, and general feedback.
Getting Started/Housekeeping
Visit the BTS New Faculty Welcome Page for additional details on how to get started. While the page you are reading right now provides information specific to your assigned ESL level, the Welcome Page provides general information that all faculty can use, such as policies on grading, CASAS testing, the academic calendar, and more.
