I've been teaching art classes at South Seattle College since the Fall quarter of 2019. I teach drawing 111, 112, 113 and painting 201, 202 and 203 painting courses. The history of making is the expression of being human. Our ability to communicate through the visual arts hones critical thinking skills that apply to many career pursuits. Through art we can celebrate what brings us joy, protest the dehumanization of the world around us, find motivation to keep moving forward, and imagine a better future. Through the creative process we develop abstract thinking, envisioning and imaging, critical thinking, spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills that build self-confidence. My favorite part about teaching is helping students to develop their unique, creative voice.
My personal artistic work is process-oriented, often beginning with a piece of fabric or paper, adding threads, ephemera, paint and markmaking — to create haptic, dimensional wall pieces, sculptural objects and installations. Thinking in terms of visual poems, I look to distill what is profound about mysteries of being human. I am inspired by contemporary pancultural markers — to explore narratives around the body. This includes themes of motherhood, home, spirituality, addiction, language, architecture, and how we protect the vulnerable — like the elderly, our children, and the planet. There is an inherent intimacy in everything I make, no matter the scale. My attention lingers in the liminal, making connections between states of being and the need for belonging. You can see more of my work locally at ArtXchange Gallery in Pioneer Square, a contemporary gallery whose mission is reflecting the diversity of influences shaping the Seattle community and contemporary global culture, in the 2020 solo show catalog Due Belle Voci, or at my website at www.deborahkapoor.com.
The easiest way to reach me is through my Canvas inbox, or my South Seattle College email address at Deborah.kapoor@seattlecolleges.edu. Please let me know how I can help you with anything related to the class you are enrolling in.
I am looking forward to getting to know you at South Seattle College!
