Personal Statement
Hello! My name is Andrea Salgado (she/her/hers), I am the Interim First Year and Career Services (FYCS) Retention Manager at Seattle Central College.
I support "undecided"/exploratory students in making informed decisions to an academic pathway with clarity and confidence, and work together with students to ensure that their decisions are in alignment with their personal and career goals. I work collaboratively with students in conversations around:
Exploring career opportunities, personal interests and academic pathways to get there.
Understanding how to use self-guided exploration tools and referrals to additional resources that will support in the personal exploration of career options.
Academic guidance* on class selection and potential areas of study.
*Academic guidance/advising provided to students assigned to me as their primary advisor. Please see your Starfish account for your primary advisor assignment.
About me
I am a first-gen, Filipina of the diaspora, daughter of immigrant parents. Part of my identity includes having been a community college transfer student, being first in my family to pursue a graduate degree, and a neurodivergent girl still navigating the question of “who do I want to be when I grow up?”
As a formally trained Social Worker (MSW), the way in which I engage in practice is guided by the principle that community and storytelling are fundamental to our work. Professionally, I have worked in the following systems at both the direct service levels and program/organizational levels: social services; behavioral health; criminal/legal; gender-based violence; and higher education. My most recent professional experience prior to Seattle Central was working as an advocate with survivors of domestic violence at a local org.
My Advice to students: Make time in your schedule to make relationships and build your community of people that uplift, support, and challenge you lovingly. Seattle Central College can be a great place to do that.
