Personal Statement

Information About Spring '25 Quarter Classes

HEA150 Health and Human Sexuality (Fully Online)
HEA150 Health and Human Sexuality is traditionally fully online: there are no Zoom meetings, and all class work (readings, weekly and biweekly homework, biweekly quizzes, one project, and two exams) are online, and to be submitted via Canvas. There is no textbook. HEA150 is a "survey" course, which means content is more general and broad in scope. Topics we will cover include behavior change, personality, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, physical activity, tobacco, alcohol, other psychoactive substances, basic reproductive physiology, contraception, sexually transmitted infections, and aging. A link to the current quarter's reading and homework can be found hereI look forward to working with you all!

PEC136 Yoga (Hyflex = option of in-person or virtual via Zoom or asynchronous via Zoom recording)

Students attend in person or via Zoom, MWF 9-9:50am. If unable to participate on a particular day, students can earn credit by participating in and briefly summarizing the Zoom recording, which I upload after each session. In-person students: please bring a yoga mat if you have one, but it’s not required. Virtual students: you’ll need at least a 6x6 space to move, stand, sit, and lie down comfortably. A yoga mat will be helpful, and you may want a towel/blanket for support in some activities. All students, please wear loose-fitting, non-restrictive clothing. Namaste.

PEC143 Walking for Fitness

We will walk outdoors at meeting times, including in colder-weather and light-rain environments, and will travel a variety of routes from campus. If the weather is extreme, we will have a workout in the Roy Flores Wellness Center. In addition to meeting twice per week, students will engage in an additional 60 minutes of walking activity on their own throughout the week, submitting brief summaries of their workouts via Canvas. All students, please wear loose-fitting, non-restrictive clothing. This class is for anyone who can walk at any speed. I look forward to walking with you!

PEC179 Line Dancing

We will learn steps, combinations, and specific line dances, starting with shorter, more basic choreography and progressing in length and complexity as the quarter moves forward. Please wear loose-fitting, non-restrictive clothing. Athletic shoes are preferred because street shoes can damage our wood flooring, but if you do not have them, please wear a flat shoe.

What will our class look like? We'll begin with a warm-up that will include basic fitness- and dance-based movements. We'll then segue into line dancing, going over and practicing choreography in chunks, then putting those pieces together, first without music and more slowly, then progressing to normal speed and with music. If the class is comfortable doing so, we may also try a piece at a faster pace.

What dances will we learn? We'll start more simply, with dances like the Electric Slide, Cupid Shuffle the 10-Step, and the Wobble. We'll increase the level of complexity, practicing dances like FLEX, Fancy Like, Shivers, and Beyoncé's Country.

My Teaching Philosophy

As a Physical Education and Health instructor, I assist students with their proactive efforts to improve wellness. I fully support an individual's decision and steps to positively change health and wellness, and wish for that person to find inspiration to continue participating in physical activity beyond the classroom.
