Personal Statement
Information About Summer and Fall '25 Quarter Classes
Summer '25
HEA150 Health and Human Sexuality is traditionally fully online: there are no Zoom meetings, and all class work (readings, weekly and biweekly homework, biweekly quizzes, one project, and two exams) are online, and to be submitted via Canvas. There is no textbook. HEA150 is a "survey" course, which means content is more general and broad in scope. Topics we will cover include behavior change, personality, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, physical activity, tobacco, alcohol, other psychoactive substances, basic reproductive physiology, contraception, sexually transmitted infections, and aging. A link to the current quarter's reading and homework can be found here. I look forward to working with you all!

HEA180 Women's Health Issues (Hybrid)
We will be exploring and learning about health-related concerns that impact all human beings in some way, but especially those matters that tend to be experienced to a greater degree by women. Students will be encouraged to examine how women’s health issues are shaped by controllable factors (choices, behaviors, habits, and lifestyles) as well as non-controllable dynamics (age, national origin, socioeconomic status, availability of health and educational resources, natural and built environments, social support, government policies, culture, others). Examples of class topics include stress and stress management; weight management versus body composition, physique, and body acceptance; aging challenges; reproductive health; food, nutrition, and eating; communicable and non-communicable disease; physical activity; discrimination and marginalization experiences; home and workplace environmental challenges.
While our scheduled class sessions will include some lecture, most of our time will be spent working in groups to discuss pre-assigned articles or other media, to answer questions, and to develop potential solutions to everyday problems. Students can expect to submit written work prior to our meeting session so that everyone can be as prepared as possible to collaborate (the first day of class is an exception). In-class participation will also be worth points. There will be weekly short reflections and biweekly, untimed online quizzes. We meet on Tuesday and Thursday, 11-11:50am. I’m excited about working together to address these important issues!
PEC136 Yoga (Hyflex = option of in-person or virtual via Zoom or asynchronous via Zoom recording)
Students attend in person or via Zoom, MW 9-9:50am. If unable to participate on a particular day, students can earn credit by participating in and briefly summarizing the Zoom recording, which I upload after each session. In-person students: please bring a yoga mat if you have one, but it’s not required. Virtual students: you’ll need at least a 6x6 space to move, stand, sit, and lie down comfortably. A yoga mat will be helpful, and you may want a towel/blanket for support in some activities. All students, please wear loose-fitting, non-restrictive clothing. Namaste.
PEC139 Yoga Pilates (Hyflex = option of in-person or virtual via Zoom or asynchronous via Zoom recording)
Students can attend in person or via Zoom, MWF 11-11:50am. If students cannot participate on a particular day, they can still earn credit by participating in and briefly summarizing the Zoom recording, which I upload after each class session. In-person students: please bring a yoga mat if you have one, but it’s not required. Virtual students: you will need at least a 6’ x 6’ space so you can move, stand, sit, and lie down comfortably, and you may want a towel or blanket to help with support in some activities. All students, please wear loose-fitting, non-restrictive clothing. We will be working without shoes and socks. Let’s get moving!

My Teaching Philosophy
As a Physical Education and Health instructor, I assist students with their proactive efforts to improve wellness. I fully support an individual's decision and steps to positively change health and wellness, and wish for that person to find inspiration to continue participating in physical activity beyond the classroom.
