Personal Statement

Abigail Daane, Physics and Math
ABIGAIL R. DAANE is a Professor of Physics at South Seattle College. Formerly teaching physics at both the middle and high school level as a Knowles Science Teaching Fellow and university level at Seattle Pacific University, Dr. Daane now teaches physics, social justice in STEM, and math at South. She has been teaching (and learning from her students!) in some capacity for most of her life.

Dr. Daane strives to improve STEM teaching, leading and learning through her research on physics education. Most recently, Dr. Daane's work has focused on designing curricula for explicit teaching about equity and inclusion at the college level found at www.underrep.com. She also works with Dr. Clausell Mathis & colleagues investigating physics teacher identity as it relates to culturally relevant pedagogy. Dr. Daane works in collaboration with other teachers across the nation to think about what it means to decolonize physics learning. In the past, she has worked with the Science Education department at UW-Seattle on their Ambitious Science Teaching project and co-led professional development at Seattle Pacific University focused on increasing awareness of equity issues in the science classroom, as well as various topics about energy for several years.

Dr. Daane uses her multi-level teaching perspective, her experience researching, teaching, and designing curricula about equity and inclusion, and her skilled workshop facilitation to design to create a classroom environment that focuses on students' amazing ideas, encouraging student growth through curiosity and grit.
